Patent Search

Patent Search vs Prior Art Search: Understanding the Difference

Start with the decision

A patent search is a broad term. It may refer to research performed for patentability, technology landscaping, competitive awareness or another defined purpose. A prior art search is usually focused on finding earlier disclosures that could be relevant to a particular invention or claim concept.

Scope changes the result

The jurisdictions, databases, search terms, classifications and date range all affect a search. A clear briefing is therefore valuable: it helps align the work with the decision the result is intended to inform.

A useful output

The outcome is strongest when the key documents are organised with enough context to let the reader understand why they may matter. It should also be clear what the search did and did not cover.

Search results are necessarily limited by the agreed scope and available information.
